Subi Farmers Market

Subi Farmers Market (SFM) is on every saturday 8am-12pm at the Subiaco Primary School. We did pick an overcast then turned rainy day to go which was abit of a bummer. BUT we had tons of fun nonetheless 🙂 SFM was celebrating their 4th birthday the day we went. Cant believe that they’re there for 4 whole years and we only started going there recently. Nevermind, plenty more visits to come don’t you worry. Despite being an outdoor market and going on a rainy day, there were plenty of sheltered areas around to take cover. Somehow, we manage to forget to pack Caleb’s pram into the car so we had to carry him everywhere. He did manage to find a little crawling spot though, which made mr ants-in-his-pants very happy. And boy did he had a treat there too!! From his usual breakfast, to bueberries, strawberries, crumpets, bread. He was one happy chappy. There’s much to see and do and of course eat and we’ve already planned what we’re going to have for our next visit 🙂

First stop, we tried Mr Drummond’s food stall (he was previously on masterchef aust) and had the homemade crumpets decked out with honey, creme fraiche and blueberries. It was AMAZING. Thats already on my to-eat-list for the next visit. Don’t think its coming off the list anytime soon.

The hubs went for the Bratwurst stand and ordered the bratwurst (duh!). He went back for seconds. Nuff said.

There are plenty of food stalls, bakery, organic produce, gluten free produce, HUGE blueberries from yanchep, fruits, juices, smoothie, icy pole, plants, flowers and the list goes on and on and on….. Definitely something for everyone!! Oh theres also a dog bath/grooming stall.

As SFM is located in a primary school, theres an open field and a playground for the little ones too. Might even bring a picnic mat next time and sit on the grass when the weather is a little warmer and dryer. There’s also face painting, craft and kiddie games as well to keep the young ones busy.

Typika Artisan Roasters

Note: Photo-heavy post.

Another of our favouritest place to go to is Typika in Claremont. Its located just opposite claremont quarter shopping centre and its owned by the same dude who runs Cimbalino. Love the BIG open space, open plan kitchen, very friendly staff and just simply a very relaxing place to be. The big long tables at the back are perfect for families with kids. Plenty of room to even park a pram. When you’re in there, check out their $800K coffee roasting machine! I have no clue about coffee beans roasting but too see a whole room dedicated to it, its something we don’t see everyday. And it entertains Caleb too so its a winner for me. Their herb garden is a pretty good area to take the kids too. And they actually use the herbs they grow. They do breakfast (french toast a MUST-TRY) and lunch (BEEF RIBS!!) menu, however, they ONLY do all day breakfast menu items on the weekend. So if you want to try their lunch its just mon-fri. That said, both their lunch AND breakfast stuff are awesome. Maybe thats why I’m there all the time. Enough with the words. Let the pictures do the talking. (photos are accumulated from a few visits 🙂 )

The Grove Library and Monogram Caffe

Took the little one to The Grove library at Peppermint Grove yesterday morning.

http://thegrovelibrary.net/

1 Leake St (cnr Leake St & Stirling Hwy)
Peppermint Grove WA 6011

We got there before the library opened (opens at 9am) so we decided to just sit in the cafe which is attached to the library. Monogram caffe, is now my new favourite place to go at the moment. Service is impeccable, coffee is perfect. And to top it off, Emma makes her own baked treats, which are not overly sweet and are good for kids. Emma was a nanny for 9 yrs before running Monogram caffe, so she knows whats good for the little ones. We had the flourless chocolate cake, pear blueberry muffin and my usual skinny cap. Cannot fault any of it.

You can actually bring in books, magazines, newspapers from the lib into the cafe. Sit (inside or outside), read, have coffee. Bliss.

After a lovely morning tea, we headed into the library and hung out in the kids section. Big empty space to move around, tables and chairs, beanbags, toys, puzzles and plenty of books. They run baby rhyme time and also story time session there. The kids room is just right next to the cafe, so you don’t really have to stress if the kids are noisy. A very well thought out set up.

Overall, this is probably the best library I’ve been too. Armed with magazines and books, we were happy to head home after a fun-filled morning and can’t wait to be back again. Anyone interested to join us next time? 🙂

AWESOME arts 2013 and B&Js scoop van

Over the weekend we headed into town to check out the AWESOME international arts festival for bright young things (www.awesomearts.com). It’s held at the Perth cultural centre, WA state library, museum of WA, state theatre centre and also in tents in that same precinct. Its on from the 5-18 Oct 2013. Theres lots of acts and things to do and see which includes robots, a ballet performed on shopping trolleys, dinosaurs, a gigantic whale, crazy music, delightful theatre, making your own story book, bottle painting and wonderful films. Much of the festival is free and their ticketed shows are affordable. They offer family passes too.

We didn’t catch any of the shows as Caleb is still a little too young. The shows and activities are suited for kids aged 2 and up. Wish my niece was here, she would have had a blast!! But that said, Caleb still had fun watching the displays outside and all the very colourful decorations. In particularly, he liked the water display, which the artist connected water hoses to form an intricate water feature. It also allows kids to connect the hose nozzle to various inlets and then observe where the water will come out from. Very spiffy indeed. Unfortunately the picture i took didn’t turn out well. Overall i think its a very interesting event and am looking forward till next year’s and I’m sure Caleb will enjoy it even more.

After checking out the festival, we crossed over to Forrest place to have some Ben & Jerrys. The scoop van is usually situated at the cultural centre but its temporarily at Forrest place. Some may say B&Js ice cream is too sweet and over-rated but to me its one of my favourite ice cream and I LOVE ICE CREAM!! Sometimes I wonder if my love (borderline obsessed) for it is actually the cause of Caleb being so hyperactive. But thats not stopping me still. Just probably gotta eat more of it to keep up with him.

We sat, had our ice cream and the whole time Caleb was just eyeing it off. But i wasn’t ready to share just yet. He did have a tinsy-tiny-miniscule bit though. Basically he just licked off whatever that was left on my spoon. hehe. One day baby.. one day. You can have a little bit more.

Cioccolato espresso, Applecross

What a glorious monday morning. When the little got up, we got changed into walking gear, packed his breakfast and went for a walk down to the river to soak up all the vitamin D goodness. One of our favourite cafes is very close to us and ideally situated near the river. We headed there after our walk. Cioccolato espresso, home to good coffee, great friendly staff and just has a very chillax-ed vibe to it. Had my usual skinny cap and hubs had a long black this time (he usually has a long mac topped up, which cioccolato makes it very well too). They do home-made muffins (had the hazelnut, apple and currant today), cakes and also offer a full breakfast and lunch menu. They also have a range of gluten free options available.

Theres plenty of seating spaces. And today, we sat outside to soak up all the sunshiny goodness. Theres also seats inside and along the alley way. Theres also a dog-drinking bowl outside and Caleb just LOVES watching and patting (with owners permission of course) the dogs.

About 5 mins walk from cioccolato, you’ll hit the river foreshore. Theres a little jetty at the end, swings and a playground as well. And if you’re in luck, you’ll be able to spot some dolphins too.

Station Street Markets, Subiaco

We normally do our weekly fruit and veggie shopping at subi markets on the weekend, preferably in the early morning when it is less crowded. Markets open as early as 7am, which is perfect for us since Caleb is an early riser. Bright and early this morning, we headed to the markets and got there just before 8am. We found seats at the eating area, which includes indoors and outdoor and there are plenty around. There are no highchairs available but there are tables which can accommodate a pram. As i started feeding Caleb his usual breakfast in his pram, Hubs made a beeline to La Galette de France and ordered their most awesome heavenly smelling (you can literally smell them from a mile away) flaky buttery almond croissant. They bake all their goods fresh on premise, so you can always be guaranteed fresh from the oven goodness. And when their famous almond croissants come out of the oven, you can be sure they don’t stick around for long. Along with my croissant, i had my usual skinny cap and the hubs had the chicken and mushroom crepe. Perfect to the last mouthful.

The market also boost a wide variety of cuisine. Theres french, japanese, vietnamese, persian, asian, greek, juice bar, ice cream, you name it they have it! Definitely a great place for showing the little ones food from different cultures and background.

After our bellies are filled, we then proceeded to do our weekly fruit and veggie shopping. Another great place for the little ones to touch and feel and learn all about the different fruits and vegetables. The whole place is just so vibrant and colourful. They often have fruit samples as well. By bringing Caleb there regularly, I hope he will grow to appreciate the fresh produce we can get here in Perth, and that he’ll eat all his veggies so i don’t have to hide them in his food next time! 🙂

Before we head home for Caleb’s morning nap, I always like to walk past and just admire the fresh flowers. The smell the colours the prettiness just puts a smile to my face and what a perfect end to a perfect morning. All I have to do now is to teach Caleb that petals are not for plucking! Till next week Subi Markets.
